It was our family tradition for many years while I was growing up to go to the Blue Island 4th of July parade. It was a ritual: parking by Uncle Roy's house and setting up on a folded blanket on the curb in just the right spot on Western. I remember how elaborate the floats were, laughing at the Shriners weaving around on their tiny motorcycles, and the fireworks that were nothing but a flash and boom that would make every baby around for miles cry.

My father, Edward Wayne DeWitt, aka Pop Ewing, passed away yesterday. I am sad, but I am also very happy he is with the rest of his family who passed before him and is at rest. I know while his body is at rest now, the personage that is his spirit is alive! The part of him that thinks, feels, loves, tells stories, desires to work hard and care and provide for his family, is very much alive! The reunion in the spirit world yesterday must have been very powerful as I know the friends and family who have already passed to the other side of the veil love him so much! He is a very quiet but loving man in private, very outgoing and super talkative in public. Most of our times together in public ended up with him talking to complete strangers, bragging on his family and talking for a looonngg time. LOL...he touched many hearts. He will be missed by many! Looking forward to the reunion in heaven one day when we embrace as father and son, full of truth and light and looking forward to doing all the work in heaven that needs to be done; and we will be doing it together! Looking forward to seeing friends and family this weekend in Blue Island, IL, as we gather to mourn together and remember and celebrate his life. Edward Wayne DeWitt, March 29, 1934 - October 7, 2013

I'm so sorry you had to leave us so soon, Dad. I will miss you very much. As much as we may have had trouble during the last few years I was your caregiver, I did love and respected you more than I may have let on. I hope your watching the big crowds that show up for you as a testament to all the people who loved you. I take some solace at that you are now at peace and the infections and pain can hurt you no more.
