Obituary of Agnes W Poetzinger

Agnes (née MacLeod) was born on May 25, 1938 in Stornoway, Scotland. She was the third daughter of Norman and Mary Ann MacLeod, beloved little sister to Etta (Smith) and Annie (Honeyman). Agnes loved her life, upbringing and family on the Isle of Lewis. Her love of Stornoway, the Isle of Lewis, Scotland and all of her family there was life-long. Agnes emigrated to Chicago with her mother Mary Ann during her teenage years in the 1950s and attended Fenger High School on the South Side of Chicago. An excellent student, she graduated in 1954 at the age of only 16. Agnes worked as an executive secretary for businesses in Downtown Chicago throughout her 20s, and loved being a part of the Roseland Ski Club and all of the adventures with good friends skiing throughout the country. In November of 1966, Agnes married David Arthur Poetzinger. Their son David Ian Poetzinger was born in December of 1967. David Arthur passed away in January, 1970. In December of 1970, Agnes married Laurence Thomas Poetzinger. Their sons Andrew Philip Poetzinger was born in July of 1971 and Michael Stuart Poetzinger in October of 1976. Agnes worked for Marsh & McLennan, Alexander & Alexander, and Aon as an executive secretary. As we all know her, she was impeccable with language and writing, and was organized to a "T" in her role there. Agnes passed away on September 6, 2021 surrounded by her family who loved her deeply, listening to the Scottish music that she loved. Those are the details . . . but not the essentials. Anyone who knew Agnes knew the joyful, celebratory nature of her presence. The parties thrown by Agnes on Seeley Avenue were full of happy noise, great food, beloved friends & family, and, above all, laughter. Her family was everything to her. She was unremitting in her love for her kids; all of us knew that mom loved us deeply and always had our back. She made us who we are today. Anyone who knew Agnes knew one of the most resilient people around. Agnes navigated the slings and arrows of life with grace, kindness, toughness, and love. She provided the example of how to walk through the valleys of life to everyone who knew her. Her friends and family know her love of adventure – the next vacation trip, happy hour, or dining out was just around the corner. Agnes made those human connections with all of us her priority; the day out on the golf course or the trip to Puerto Vallarta was the conduit to spend time with the people who she loved. She emanated an accepting and non-judgmental nature; she lived the saying that you can't love people if you are judging them. Agnes leaves behind numerous beloved friends, and her devoted family, including Larry, David and Mitzi (Raff), Andrew and Cheryl (Antolec), Michael, Jackie Smith and Agnes' nine grandchildren: David and Mitzi's kids Derek, Scott and Julia, Andrew and Cheryl's kids Andrew, Trevor and Maddie, Michael's kids Elijah and Alison, and Jackie's daughter Darci. We all miss her tremendously. When you were with her, she made every day more fun, more joyful, more celebratory. We were all lucky enough to have the light of her love in our lives.
