Obituary of Umberto Aiello
Umberto Aiello, of Blue Island, peacefully departed this world on December 11, 2024 surrounded by his family. He was 82 years old.
Umberto was born on May 30, 1942 in Calabria, Italy to the late Agostino and Elisa Aiello née Cesario. He is survived by his former wife of fifty years, Filomena Fortino Aiello. Umberto is the loving father to Elisa Aiello (Dale Erickson), Maria Aiello (Jerry Scinto) and Agostino Aiello. He is the dear brother to Emma, the late Francesco, Maria, Yolanda, Silvio, Orlando, the late Alfredo and Mario.
Umberto loved to spend his days nurturing the earth and watching it come to life. His garden was his sanctuary, where he could often be found tending to his plants with a gentle touch. From succulent fruits and fresh vegetables, his passion for gardening was reflected in the beauty that bloomed under his care. Umberto found joy in harvesting the fruits of his labor, always eager to share the bounty with family and friends.
Umberto loved gathering with his family every weekend, cherishing these moments spent together. During the winter months, he enjoyed card games, and in the summer, he could often be found playing bocce ball. His passion for bocce led him to build his own bocce ball court, a place where his entire family could come together and enjoy time in each other's company.
A natural-born carpenter, Umberto had a remarkable skill for building and fixing things in his home. He was a master of woodworking, always creating with a vision and redesigning anything he saw, crafting it in his own unique way. His ingenuity and craftsmanship were unmatched.
Umberto continued the traditions he brought from Italy, making his own wine, red vinegar, Italian sausage, prosciutto, and capocollo, just as he had learned back home. These traditions were a testament to his love for his heritage and his desire to share these cherished customs with his family.
He was a man who lived simply but richly, finding happiness in life's small pleasures, whether it was the taste of a homegrown tomato or the warmth of Fifi, his beloved cat, curling up beside him. His gentle spirit, generosity, and love for his children and the world around him will be deeply missed.
A memorial visitation will be held in his memory on Friday, December 20, 2024 from 3:00 pm until 8:00 pm, with the memorial service at 6:00 pm at the Krueger Funeral Home, 13050 Greenwood Ave, Blue Island. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice in his memory.
Rest in peace, Umberto. May your garden continue to grow, and may Fifi always be by your side in spirit.
