Matt, the help you have given me will never be forgotten. Your friendship will be cherished forever. The F.O.E. teaches us our life on earth is brief, not permanent, and that we will meet again. Just don't drink all the beer, save some for us!

Rest In Peace Matt! My next-door neighbor for twenty years and my dad's best friend. You always looked after me and my sisters and you were a great support for my dad and Jacque and all of us when my dad got diagnosed. Your generosity and kindness are exactly what makes towns like Blue Island special places in which to live. Enjoy a cold one up in Heaven with my dad. Cheers!

Matt
Thank You for all you have been to me, you instilled in me the importance that education played in being a good firefighter, and also how to spread that out to the members that worked under us. You were always firm on the job, but a true friend both on the job and off.
Whether we were in Ireland or a local pub, it was always good to have a few beers together. You will be missed. Say hello to all our friends up there, and thank you for all you kindness and understanding.
Christina

Dear O'Callaghan family,
I had the privilege of meeting Matt around 1998 when I began working as a bartender at Broukal's in Blue Island, and we remained friends long after I left. I am deeply sorry for your loss. My husband and I both were born and raised in Blue Island, however we moved to Sedona Arizona six years ago and we won't be able to attend his service. It really was a privilege to call Matt my friend. He was a true gentleman. I was always so happy to see him. He was kind, funny and he had the biggest heart. There was never a time I saw him angry or upset. He was always smiling. It's really sad he was taken too soon. I will keep him and your family in my prayers tonight. I'll light a candle for him at the Chapel of the Holy Cross too. I hope you find some comfort in all the nice things people are saying and will say about Matt. It really was a privilege to have known him and I'm so sorry. He will be missed. Blue Island was a better community because of Matt.
Sincerely,
Peg Shimkus

Matt, Judy and I worked together for several years on the late seventies. Matt then worked at the fire department with my ex husband Ron. We have been friends a very long time. The memories are long and great. You are missed dear friend. RIP and Godspeed. To Judy and the clan my heart ❤️ hurts for the loss. Hugs to you all.

Matt, you were my lieutenant, mentor and friend. For 20 years we worked, lived, had great times and sad times. Say hi to Duey, keep Fryer and Stompanoto at bay, make sure Gino keeps them apart. Tell Father Frank I said hi. Have a cold one on me. I'll miss you.
