Deepest Sympathy from the late James J O’Brien ( former BI PD) Sally O’Brien & family.
We always enjoyed dining at Mario’s! A must when we would go back to BI.
May God’s Perpetual Light always shine on him.

My family, friends and I have been going to Mario’s for over 40 years. When we lived in Blue Island we frequently dined there three times in a week. I like to say that my oldest (41 now) daughter was weaned on Mario’s. She still comes back from Naperville to have the best Margarita, guacamole and carne asada. About five years ago my daughter, her two girls and I had lunch at Mario’s. It was extremely busy that day. Dan was doing his best serving, but it was so busy that even the cook was waiting on tables. Simultaneously, all the tables finished and people were eager to sit down. Next thing I see is Mario clearing tables and helping in the dining room. I had seen him many times in the past, but this was a first!
My sincere condolences to the entire Mendez family on the loss of a veritable treasure. Mimi Flanagan

Rocky McCoy posted a condolence

My sincere condolences. My name is Rocky McCoy. I began to frequent the restaurant pretty much as it opened. Hooked from the beginning, I ever wanted to eat at another Mexican restaurant. A year later, upon helping to found the band, “Porter County Line”, I discovered that the bassist, Marc Scholl, knew Mario quite well, and in fact was teamed with him in at least one band, and were about to be signed to a Motown contract when one of the brothers who led the band got drafted into the service. Once Mario started the restaurant, he turned his full attention to the business, and perhaps we are all better for it. But I still wish I had gotten to jam with him. From all accounts, he was as adept at the drums as he was with a grill or business matters. More importantly, he was a good and gracious man. I’ll always be great full for his kind encouragement to a young singer-guitarist who was just starting to play in front of people. He will be missed and fondly remembered. God speed, my friend

Mario played so many roles in life: Husband, Father, Grandpa, Restauranteur, Drummer, Gardener & friend just to name a few. But he did them all so well! We will miss you but know that you are finally at rest. Please watch over your family & friends and help their hearts to heal. We wish we could be there Thursday night but we will keep the entire Mende family in our prayers. Hang on tight to each other! Rocky & Geri McCoy

The last conversation we had, we spoke food and recipes. He was complimenting my rice and I was complementing his tamales. He was full of life, experience and stories he shared with my husband and I that night. He will be truly missed. Mendez family you are in our hearts and prayers. Keep dad alive with memories of his life and by sharing his stories until you meet again.

My heart is filled with sorrow at the loss of this beautiful person. I have been going to Mario’s since 1975 and not only met and regularly spoke with Mario but watched his son Danny go from a little boy loving to be working in the restaurant with his father to becoming an integral part of the management of his fathers business. My sons were 6 and 8 then and now they are both in there fifties and I now have 6 grandchildren and 1 great grand child and since they have been born they have come to Mario’s and not just for lunch and dinners but birthdays and holidays and just because we all needed a Mario’s meal and to say hi to Danny and always ask how Mario was. May God Bless Mario for all his hard work and May God Bless all his beautiful family!
Sincerely
A Super Loyal Customer/Friend

Everyone in Blue Island considers Mario’s Tacos as a treasure. When I remarked to his son that I admired the patio flowers so much he told me that their beauty existed because his father spent hour upon hour caring for them. I had plans to visit him in his garden and get his advice, but alas I waited too long. Thank you, kind sir, for bringing that beauty to us
