It has been a blessing to know Shirley for more than 60 years—since my parents bought house next door to the Haveck family. My earliest memory of Shirley's kindness is the Kool-Aid and freshly-baked cookie treats she would give to us while we played board games (Chutes and Ladders, Candyland and Pahrcheesi) with Kathy on her front porch. One of my fondest memories of Shirley is a weekend trip my younger brother, Donnie, and I got to make to Paw Paw Michigan where we got to spend 2 nights at Shirley's in-laws' house. Besides the wonderful home-cooked meals, there were plenty of freshly-baked desserts to enjoy. The year was 1966 and we went to see The Glass Bottom Boat – starring Doris Day and Rod Taylor. Sunday morning we went to church, along the way I remember passing several large, old bells that were anchored to stone or concrete blocks close to the ground. Donnie and I were both fascinated by the sizes and surface features of these bells from an earlier time. Shirley remained an important person in our lives as we grew older, graduated, married and went on to have families of our own. Paul Sr. and Shirley were present at many of my families' celebrations, including: Weddings, Anniversaries, Birthday Parties and ,sadly, Funerals. We will all miss Shirley's bright smile and soft voice when we fondly remember this kind and loving woman.
Rest in peace, Shirley. May God continue to bless you forever.
